Soha Ali Khan: The Dream Factory and a Princess in Waiting.
So what if your father is "Tiger Pataudi" who in his youth was the youngest captain ever appointed to the Indian Cricket team officially known as Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan, the Nawab of Pataudi. Your mother is screen goddess Sharmila Tagore, your older brother is Saif Ali Khan, an A-List movie hero himself and you have an undergraduate degree from Oxford and a Master Degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics. Does that mean you are going to make it in Mumbai's tinsel town, Bollywood? Well if you are Soha Ali Khan, who just happens to have in her possession all of the above, you are just going to have to roll with those punches, because if that just so happens to be your fate, well one might as well meet their inevitable destiny. Soha Ali Khan, the girl who has everything, has decided to attempt to make it big in Bollywood. Will she make it? We will see, and for her its a big risk she is willing to take.
What is it about Bollywood that would make a girl give up a high paying job with an NGO in New York City and London to sweat under the footlights in a dusty studio in Mumbai's Film city? What would make an actual royal princess trade in lunch at the Russian Tea Room for a box lunch in a canteen between dance takes for a masala entertainer? The lure of the dream factory of films is something that goes beyond reason. Well if you think she is crazy, think twice because you would probably jump at the chance if it was ever offered to you. Given the choice between security and the chance of living out your dreams, who would not choose the far flung chance to realize their fantasies? That is human nature, its what makes us human, and its why we are so drawn to the world of Bollywood films in the first place.
Soha Ali Khan: And Our Collective Fantasies
So one really can't fault Soha Ali Khan in her quest for Bollywood stardom. In a way she is living out our collective fantasies which may be one of the reasons why she has for a total newcomer been given such overwhelmingly good press. Everyone seems to be rooting for her to succeed, because her dream is in many ways our dream. If a princess from out of nowhere can become a movie goddess, then maybe anything is possible. But hey, this is Bollywood and if fantasy can come true anywhere, this is the place.
