Truly one of the great flavors of a Bollywood film song or 'picturization' are the lyrics. Ironically I know only about 20 words of Hindi and about 2 words of Urdu. I feel I can still appreciate the lyrics of a great picturization through the wonders of English transliteration. I totally understand translation though and know that the original language has much deeper meanings than what the words mean in English. But translation works it's magic too, it allows the imagination and intellect to roam, and to translate the translation to deeper levels of meaning.

This is an English translation of the Anand Bakshi lyrics to the song, "Chingair Koi Bhadke" from the film, "Amar Prem" (1971). Thanks to Meredith from Bollywhat.com for her great interpretation/translation of the song. She's a sweetheart.

>chingaaree koii bhaRke, to saawan use bujhaaye

If a spark flares up, then the rains might extinguish it.

>saawan jo agan lagaaye, use kaun bujhaaye?

But if the rains light a fire, who will put it out?

>patjhaR jo baag ujaaRe, wo baag bahaar khilaaye

If the autumn lays waste to a garden, that garden will bloom in the spring.

>jo baag bahaar mein ujaRe, use kaun khilaaye?

But if that garden is destroyed in the springtime, who will make it bloom?

>hum se mat poochho kaise, mandir tootaa sapanon kaa

Don't ask me how, the temple of shattered dreams...

>logon kii baat nahii.n hai, ye qissaa hain apanon kaa

It's not a matter for the people, these stories are for one's inner circle.

>koii dushman THes lagaaye, to miit jiyaa bahalaaye

If some enemy strikes you a blow, your companion will cheer your heart.

>manmiit jo ghaav lagaaye, use kaun mitaye?

But if your beloved inflicts the wound, who will erase it?

>naa jaane kyaa ho jaataa, jaane hum kyaa kar jaate

Who knows what would happen, who knows what we would do?

>naa jaane kyaa ho jaataa, jaane hum kyaa kar jaate

Who knows what would happen, who knows what we would do?

>peete hain to jindaa hai, naa pite to mar jaate

If we drink then we live, not drinking we die.

> duniya jo pyaasa rakhe to madiraa pyaas bujhaa'e

If the world thirsts, then wine will quench it.

> madiraa jo pyaas lagaa'e use kaun bujhaa'e

But if the wine thirsts, who can satisfy its need?

>maanaa toofaan ke aage, naheen chalataa jor kisee kaa

I accept that in the face of a storm, no one's force will work.

>maujon kaa dosh naheen hai, ye dosh hain aaur kisee kaa

This isn't the fault of the waves, someone else is to blame.

>ma.njhdhaar mein naiyaa dole, to maa.njhii paar lagaaye

If in midstream a boat rocks, then the sailor can cast it ashore.

> maa.njhii jo naav Duboye use kaun bachaa'e ?

But if the sailor sinks it midstream, who can save it?

..use kaun bachaaye?

...what can be done?

...chingaaree

...a spark
