Frame 1 - The father, Bose watches his friend and
his friend's daughter as they compete in a playful arm wresting
match. The camera positions Bose at the center of the frame
and we see him smiling.
Frame 2 - The next shot we see that Sharmila is
looking towards the action of frame 1 from a distance. Suddenly
we realize that the preceding shot could be interpreted from
multiple points of view; Bose watching the pair arm wresting,
and Sharmila looking on at the whole scene from afar.
Frame 3 - The next shot is a reaction close-up
of Sharmila as she timidly continues to watch.
Frame 4 - The camera moves to a close-up of Bose
as he looks up from the arm wrestlers and realizes that Sharmila
is watching. He stares at her.
Frame 5 - Framed in the same composition as frame
3 the reaction shot now also becomes the point of view shot
for the close up of Bose. Sharmila then realizes that Bose
sees her watching and she lowers her eyes.
The way these few shots are constructed and edited together
is very complicated and conveys many levels of emotion and
character development. It's a beautifully textured sequence
that illustrates the emotional complexity and inner turmoil
of the characters.
