Bollywood films: Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai

The 'Little' Film That Launched Two Superstars

Talking about KNPH, Link to Still photo captures of the film here.

In the year 2000 the film "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai" caught the imagination of the Bollywood watching world. It was a super hit on the subcontinent and a blockbuster phenomenon with the Indian Diaspora. By the year's end KNPH ran away with seven prizes at the Filmfare (the Indian Oscars) Awards sweeping all the major categories including Best Picture. KNPH launched Hrithik Roshan and Amisha Patel, the film was both of their debuts. In the process two superstars were born and what was to be know as 'Hrithik Mania' swept the country. Hrithik became the most talked about idolized and visible instant star of the present Bollywood era. The music of KNPH rose to number one and stayed there for months and two of the songs, "Ek Pal Ka Jeena" and "Na Tum Jano Na Hum" will go down as classics of Bollywood music.

The whole film came out of nowhere. It was not a major release and did not receive widespread publicity. Word of mouth carried it along and fans went to this movie to see it again and again. KNPH was hugely popular with Indian's abroad in England, Canada, and the United States where it was shown in theaters for the better part of a whole year.

I have a special place in my heart for KNPH. It was the first Bollywood film that I experienced in a movie theater. This was the film that got me hooked on Bollywood.

The Myth That Surrounds The Movie

There are many stories that surround KNPH, stories that have entered into the mythology of Bollywood lore. The foremost of these 'tales' (the veracity of which is inconsequential as they very may well be true and then again not but they are regardless part of the KNPH folklore and as such are taken to be true) is that the casting of Hrithik was a spur of the moment whim by the director (who just happens to be Hrithik's father Rakesh Roshan). Legend has it that the originally intended lead actor for KNPH had backed out and the director and producer Rakesh Roshan was having a production meeting at his house when Hrithik walked in gleaming with sweat from a recent workout. The production team looked up at Hrithik where upon Hrithik said, "What are you looking at?" Where upon Dad offered him the part as the lead actor of KNPH. Reportedly Hrithik turned white as a sheet and almost fainted then turned down the offer. Hrithik had plans to go the United States to study computer science and had no interest in acting, but being the obedient son he reassessed these career plans and took the acting part per his father's wishes. The rest is as they say history.

The second story surrounding KNPH is strangely similar in regards to the casting of Amisha Patel. Amisha hails from one of the richest families in Mumbai and they had been family friends of the Roshan's for years. Reportedly as legend goes Amisha was offered the lead of KNPH by Rakesh Roshan at a social gathering at the Patel's. The lead role had just recently been dropped by Kareena Kapoor (it was to have been Kareena's debut film, but as legend has it she did not want to debut opposite another 'newcomer', Hrithik). Amisha who had been pestering her parent's to let her venture into Bollywood accepted the part with dad's consent and earned Amisha the eternal wrath of Kareena Kapoor and her sister Karisma Kapoor.

The third story associated with KNPH lore is that Hrithik almost had a nervous breakdown on the set because he couldn't do the dance steps. Apparently he was crying and calling his mom saying he just couldn't dance and wanted to quit the film. The choreographer calmed Hrithik down and asked him to just loosen up by dancing the way he would if he was at a disco. The choreographer liked what she saw and then incorporated Hrithik's own dance steps into the sequence. This way the very unique 'Hrithik Style' was born.

The fourth story, which is very true indeed, but by whom and really why remains a mystery is that Rakesh Roshan was shot in the arm narrowly escaping with his life in a Mafia based assassination attempt. The official story states that Mr. Roshan refused to pay extortion 'protection' money to the Indian Mafia and as a result a hit was put out on his life. Bollywood is rife with extortion attempts by the Mafia and Rakesh Roshan has been an advocate against the Mafia. A couple of weeks before the Filmfare Awards ceremony. Roshan's car was ambushed and he was shot. At the Filmfare awards Hrithik gave a stirring speech talking about the highs and lows of his year alluding to the failed assassination attempt on his father by the Mafia as being the low.

You Know You are Obsessed With KNPH When...

She says to Amisha Patel right before the song "Ek Pal Ka Jeena", "Come on baby, it's time to Rock And Roll!" That is actress Tanaaz Currim who has the supporting role as Amisha's super-hip cousin. Tanaaz has had supporting roles in a handful of Bollywood films most recently as Urmila Matondkar 's private secretary and confidant in "Deewangee". (If anyone out there knows more about Tanaaz please e-mail me as I want to do a page about her.)

Farida Jalal who seems to play a supporting role in ever single major Bollywood film of the past 5 years does her 'Auntie' turn as Hrithik's (what else) Aunt in KNPH. She is one of my favorite character actors who has been in Bollywood for over 20 years.

I made a web page devoted to her. Check out the Farida Jalal Bollywood501 page.

The actor Anupam Kher has a small part in KNPH as Amisha's father. It's not the patriot father of Manisha Koirala from 1942 A Love Story, but it is still Anupam. He has won 8 Filmfare acting awards in his distinguished career and shows no sign of letting up. Go Anupam Go!

I made a web page on Anupam. Check out the Anupam Kher Bollywood501 page.
