One of the reoccurring motifs of "Mohabbatein" is the use of 'the circle' as a symbolic and metaphoric devise. The circle is used as part of the set design, in dance choreography, and with camera movement. As an archetype the circle represents 'unity' and 'wholeness' , in "Mohabbatein" the circle appears to represent transformative forces associated with love and desire.

Just as the round gazebo on the school grounds the Shahrukh Khan character Raj, teaches out of is the main material circle represented in the film, the song, "Rhythms of Mohabbatein" is the main representation in terms of technical camera movement and choreography. The whole song picturization is based on circular dance steps and camera movements. The feeling the song elicits is what I would term, ' the circular whirlwind of emotion'.

The sequence studied here comes at the end of the song, "Rhythms of Mohabbatein". It show an incredibly sophisticated use of filmic devises. In a seamless single shot, with camera movement, lighting, and acting, the interior psyche and exterior feelings of the characters are shown with great depth and sensitivity that is immediately understood.

01) The sequence begins at the end of a dance number. It is night on a deserted palatial patio. The two lover's embrace. With her eyes closed and face in shadow, she passionately holds him. The camera begins its 360-degree counter clockwise tracking shot that circles the characters.

02) As they embrace the camera moves and the frame slowly eclipses her face behind the male character's. Metaphorically she has entered into him and his thoughts and desires.

03) She emerges from behind him now on the right side of the frame as the camera moves its way around the characters. Her face is now brightly lit, exposing their embrace to the light. Her eyes are still closed their faces nearly touch. (Simulating a kiss with camera angles and movement)

04) As her face becomes fully exposed by the camera angle and lighting she slowly opens her eyes and for the first time in the film's narrative looks with passion into his eyes.

05) The camera has now completed a 90-degree counter clockwise circuit (a 1/4 circle). Suddenly as if stirring from a dream (or from the shadows now into light) she is awakened. The emotions on her face change from passion to shock...

06) ...To shame, heartbreak, and the reality of her social situation that seemingly must keep her apart from him. She turns from him moving away, the camera also zooms back to a medium shot (into a less intimate space). The camera continues to move in it's circular motion around the couple.

07) He reaches out to close the distance. He desires to return to the moment that had just passed. She stands frozen caught at the center of the 'whirlwind' of emotions (which is also the pivot point of the camera's movement).

08) The sequence reaches a 180-degree arc (a 1/2 circle). The film frame now eclipses a character's face for the second time. In this instance it is his and as earlier when the camera had obscured the female character a change of emotion is signaled.

09) As the camera continues its circular movement, his face now emerged from behind her (metaphorically also from behind her thoughts as she had done earlier from behind his) and he draws his hand away stepping back. There is a look of doubt on his face.

10) The camera zooms back from the characters as he takes a couple of steps back, talking the frame into an even further less intimate space.

11) The pair have now retreated to opposite ends of the film's frame facing away from each other. He turns and exit's to the right as the camera continues on it's path around her.

12) Alone now in the frame, it is only then that she turns to look in the direction he has exited. The camera has completed a 3/4 circle and continues on it's course and in turn slowly zooms in on her face.

13) The camera completes its 360-degree circuit and stops. She stands looking off camera in the direction he had left. The camera moves in closer. Her positioning is nearly identical to the opening frame of the sequence. The shot ends here.
