In the 1970s Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore starred together in a string of Bollywood films that captured the imagination of the Indian film going public. "Amar Prem" was one of their best. Both Khanna and Tagore were at the height of their star power and this weepy melodrama is really carried by their popular fame than by the merits of the film itself. Their respective performances are magnificently rendered.

R.D. Burman's music and Anand Bakshi's lyrics for "Amar Prem" produced some of the most haunting and beautiful songs of the period.
