puttin' on the moves - Sridevi - "Gumrah" (1993)

In my humble opinion Sridevi reached the peak of her powers in the early 1990s. Her look, dramatic and comic acting, and screen presence that she had refined over the years was distilled into a fine essence, a quintessential and unique screen image, unmistakable, and wholly her own. Few screen presences refine themselves into unmistakable uniqueness, Charlie Chaplin, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Monroe, Sridevi, they all achieved this iconic status. As a film idol worshipped by the masses throughout the 1980s and early 90s her presence in India was one of near deification. Sridevi was also prolific and she had already been the star of well over 200 films by the time she made "Gumrah" in 1993. Not a great film, "Gumrah" does have some great Sridevi moments. The scenes of Sridevi trapped as a prisoner in a woman's jail in Hong Kong are some of her most famous. Without make-up and dressed in a drab prisoner's outfit she gives one of her best dramatic performances that verges on silent film style acting histrionics. The films also has a bunch of classic Sridevi dance numbers.
