Urmila Matondkar - "Chamma Chamma" item number - "China Gate" [1998]

What more can one say about the item number "Chamma Chamma" from "China Gate"than a resounding, "WOW"? I thought it was the main reason for watching the whole three hour film! Urmila Matondkar in a (as in Bollywood slang) 'special appearance', is the center piece of this most joyous of classic Bollywood dance numbers. Many critics felt that the "Chamma Chamma" item number stuck out like a sore thumb in "China Gate". Which was a full blown action/adventure movie with an awesome star studded male cast. The fact though is that "Chamma Chamma" ends up being much more memorable than the rest of the film. Composer Anu Malik who has scored over 200 films and is one of the most well known and respected film composers working in India today wrote the music. The song with Sameer's nonsense chorus were used in Baz Luhrmann's musical film "Moulin Rouge". Strangely, in a tacky twist of fate, Malik's name was left off the credits of "Moulin Rouge". Which in my opinion is indicative of the complete lack of knowledge and respect that Western cinema has and shows towards Hindi Popular cinema. |
