After having been discovered by Satyajit Ray and starring in his 'art circuit' film "Devi" [1960] and then appearing in a few Bengali films Sharmila Tagore took the plunge into the spotlight of Hindi popular film. "Kashmir Ki Kali" was Sharmila Tagore's first Bollywood film. She of course was a sensation and immediately became an A-list Bollywood heroine, she was only 18 years old. As the title of the film suggests "Kashmir Ki Kali"s outdoor locations were shot in Kashmir. This was years before Kashmir became the killing fields and disputed political territory it is today. Many Bollywood films would incorporate the beautiful scenery of Kashmir for song picturizations for their exotic appeal. With the advent of Raj Kapoor's "Sangam"[1964] the emphasis for songs to be filmed in foreign locations began in earnest and Kashmir's locations became passé. The film has some great songs with Shammi Kapoor in top dancing form.
