"Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" is one of the pivotal films of Bollywood history. It marked a turning point in the direction and nature of Hindi Popular film plot, theme, and story line. Up until "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" 1980s Hindi Popular film had been a violence drenched affair on garish gory overload that was an over saturated backlash from the, dare I say, elegant, yes elegant, and super popular 'angry young man' films of Amitabh Bachchan from the 1970s. "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" went against that grain and portrayed two youthful, hip, and modern lovers in a fresh romance that followed the story line of Romeo and Juliet. The film was a national sensation and began the resurgence and trend towards modern romantic love stories that still dominates Bollywood today. The films two lovers, Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan made their debut in "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" and both went on to become Bollywood mega stars. This film coincides with the advent of the Video Tape revolution in India and was one of the first super hits in that market which only went on to increase its popularity and lasting favor with with the pubic. It won the Filmfare Best Feature Film along with countless other awards. Playback singer Udit Narayan also made his debut with "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak". Film Critic/Lecturer Rachel Dwyer also cites the importance of the role of friendship in "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak". "Far more important ws the rise of the theme of love as friendship, in which the boy and the girl become friends, falling in love only after their friendship deepends... as films saw friendship replacing the theme of love as passion, an aesthetic found in the formerly dormant Urdu love lyric (ghazal)..." [ Rachel Dwyer, Yash Chopra]. |
