Vijayanthimala from "Sangam" [1964] - Violet lighting in a violet room - Vijayanthimala playing high kitsch.

"Sangam" was R. K. Films' and Raj Kapoor's first color film. It also has the distinction of being the first film shot primarily in foreign locales outside of India. This is the film that first had a song picturization in the Swiss Alps, that became a cliché in countless films afterwards. The film is very long and meandering and absolutely considered a classic of Bollywood. Sometimes I think of Bollywood films as being like watching an Opera. Well if one takes that analogy one step further, watching a 1960s or 70s Raj Kapoor film is like watching an Opera by Wagner. They are long, dense, and overwhelming. "Sangam" is no exception.

Vijayanthimala shines in this tragic love triangle and she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the film. Almost every song in the film was a super hit and are still remembered today.
