During 2002 a string of films based on female centered story lines appeared in mainstream Bollywood. In the Bollywood press these films were billed as "The Season of The Woman's Film". For one reason or another all of the films unfortunately failed critically and commercially. "Shakti - The Power" was the most publicized and successful of the lot but was far from attaining 'hit' status. Karisma Kapoor starred in this film about a very Westernized, Canadian raised Indian woman, who returns to India on vacation to find herself trapped in a nightmarish feudal landscape of violence and loss of identity. In many ways it is a reversal of the, 'India as nurturing dream landscape and fantasy' of the Diaspora, portrayed in films like "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" and "DDLJ". Ultimately the film will be remembered for the Farah Khan choreographed Item dance number "Ishq Kamina" that featured Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai (in a guest appearance). The song sizzled, and became the talk of Bollywood and a number one hit on the music charts. |
